Classic Southern Buttermilk Pie
Classic Southern Buttermilk Pie Recipe
Ingredients:
For the Pie Crust:
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 cup ice water (more if needed)
For the Filling:
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
3 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp nutmeg (optional)
Zest of 1 lemon (optional)
Instructions:
Prepare the Pie Crust: In a mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut in the chilled butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add ice water, mixing until the dough forms a ball. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Roll Out the Crust: On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to fit your pie pan. Place it in the pan and crimp the edges. Poke the bottom with a fork to prevent bubbling.
Make the Filling: In a large bowl, whisk together buttermilk, sugar, melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, flour, nutmeg, and lemon zest until smooth.
Fill the Crust: Pour the filling into the prepared crust.
Bake: Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the filling is set and the top is golden brown. Let it cool to room temperature before slicing.
Serve: Serve chilled or at room temperature with a dollop of whipped cream!
