Michigan Pasties 🥧🍽️
Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
1/4 cup ice water
1/2 pound ground beef
1/2 pound ground pork
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 cup peeled and diced potatoes
1 cup diced rutabaga
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon dried sage
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, and pepper. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add ice water, mixing until the dough comes together. Shape into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and pork over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened.
Stir in the diced potatoes, rutabaga, thyme, sage, and paprika. Cook for 5 minutes, until the vegetables start to soften. Season with additional salt and pepper if needed. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. Cut into 6-inch circles.
Place a portion of the filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over to form a half-moon shape, crimping the edges to seal. Place the pasties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Brush the tops of the pasties with the beaten egg.
Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the pasties are golden brown and cooked through.
