Tourtiere French Canadian Meat Pie
Ingredients:
1 lb ground pork
1 lb ground beef
1 large onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup beef broth
2 potatoes, peeled and diced
1 double pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Directions:
Prepare the Filling:
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground pork, ground beef, onion, and garlic until the meat is browned and the onion is soft. Drain any excess fat.
Add salt, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg to the meat mixture. Stir to combine.
Pour in the beef broth and add the diced potatoes. Simmer for about 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and most of the liquid has evaporated. Remove from heat and let the filling cool.
Assemble the Pie:
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
Roll out half of the pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch pie plate.
Spoon the cooled meat filling into the crust.
Roll out the second half of the pie crust and place it over the filling. Trim and crimp the edges to seal.
Cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape. Brush the top crust with the beaten egg.
Bake:
Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
Let the pie cool slightly before slicing and serving.
