Voodoo Doughnuts 🍩
Ingredients:
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
1/2 cup warm water
1/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup whole milk, warmed
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
Vegetable oil, for frying
Toppings:
Assorted glazes (chocolate, vanilla, etc.)
Sprinkles, crushed cookies, bacon bits, and cereal for topping
Powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar for coating
Directions:
In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water with a pinch of sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the yeast mixture, warm milk, melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, sugar, and salt. Gradually add the flour and mix until a soft dough forms.
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out to about 1/2-inch thickness. Use a doughnut cutter or a round cutter and a smaller one for the hole to cut out the doughnuts.
Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the doughnuts in batches for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
Dip the doughnuts in your choice of glaze, then sprinkle with your favorite toppings. Let the glaze set before serving.
